About the Owner
Maxwell J. Smith is the Owner of MJS Security Services, bringing more than 14 years of experience in security, public safety, leadership, and field operations. His background includes the direct oversight of security and patrol operations, K9 handling and training, security planning, risk assessment, protective services, and team development.
Smith takes a hands-on approach to leadership and remains actively involved in the day-to-day operations of MJS Security Services. His leadership philosophy is built around professionalism, accountability, preparedness, consistency, and maintaining strong operational standards in the field.
Throughout his career, Smith has completed both law enforcement-based and private security firearms training, along with training in defensive tactics, use-of-force decision-making, lawful security practices, professional de-escalation, Verbal Judo, and mental health awareness. This combination of training supports a measured and professional approach to high-stress situations, crisis intervention, and interactions with individuals experiencing behavioral or mental health crises.
In addition to his career in private security, Smith serves as a volunteer firefighter, further expanding his experience in public safety and emergency response. His fire service experience reinforces the importance of teamwork, situational awareness, scene safety, communication, emergency preparedness, and remaining composed in rapidly changing environments. His combined experience in private security and the volunteer fire service provides a practical and well-rounded approach to leadership and public safety operations.
Smith is also an experienced K9 handler and working-dog trainer, specializing in the development of Security K9s and K9 handlers. His training focuses on developing new K9 handlers, strengthening communication and control between handler and K9, obedience and control, environmental conditioning, handler protection, scenario-based training, patrol applications, and practical working-dog development. His approach emphasizes developing both the K9 and the handler to create confident, controlled, and dependable teams prepared for real-world security operations.
Smith remains directly involved in the continued development of the MJS K9 program and is currently training and developing his second working K9 partner, K9 Kirk, a Dutch Shepherd, for patrol applications. Through MJS K9 Services, Smith continues to expand professional training and development opportunities for Security K9s and new and developing K9 handlers.
Smith continues to work alongside his team in the field while overseeing training, supervision, operational development, and the continued growth of MJS Security Services.
His operational philosophy emphasizes professionalism, controlled response, preparedness, accountability, and consistency. Through continued training, professional development, volunteer fire service, K9 training, and active field involvement, Smith remains committed to maintaining high standards and providing professional security and K9 services throughout the State of Maine.
